Coulomb’s Law with Python |
Towards the end of lab hopefully a python simulation could be used to simulate the motion of charges associated with workbook problems 21.4-8! |
|
Electric field caused by continuous distributions of charge |
|
Students given a code to simulate the electric field caused by a uniform rod. Then students are asked to modify the rod parameters, point of interest (where field computed) , and to make the rod non-uniform. After that, simulate uniform & non-uniform arcs of charge. |
Field versus Potential |
Use point charges to generate field and potential visualizations on a 2D grid. Students are provided with most of the code for the 1D case for electric potential. Students are forced to deal with FOR loops, color vectors, saturation levels, etc. |

E-Field Mapping with MATLAB |
PRE-LAB in Canvas!!! Lab Handout: E-Field_Mapping.pdf
1cmCrossGrid.pdf
Test data for V vs (x,y): 163VData.xlsx Partial data for E_x: 163ExData.xlsx Partial data for E_y: 163EyData.xlsx |
Groups use a 1 cm grid spacing but only do a single map. Each group does a unique map then presents to the class.
Tip: one can avoid creating a csv file and the csvread function with a clever cut and paste. Learn both techniques.

Measuring with DMM’s |
Lab Handout: DMMs.pdf |
Lab needs improvement but it is not totally worthless. Aimed at students with zero knowledge of DMM’s. Might be able to link this together with the diode lab? |
Capacitance |

Series and Parallel Circuits |

Read the lab to determine what is expected as a pre-lab assignment. Resist the urge to copy a friend’s Excel sheet. Making the Excel sheet yourself is one of the few activities that is 100% useful to every student in regardless of major.
If you need help, seek it out….but do not copy another student’s file or simply cut and paste their work. Learn how to type in the formulas yourself! |

Motors |
Lab Handout: Motors.pdf |
I should have the templates already printed out on heavy stock. |
Function Generators and Oscilloscopes |
Lab Handout: Scopes.pdf |
Print out the worksheets before coming to class. We can’t afford to pay for toner for all students to print all these pages from the lab computer (pathetic but true). |
RC Lab |
Lab Handout: RC_Transients.pdf Note: 3rd vid walks you through RC transient measurement process.
|
No Excel sheet pre-made. |
Series LRC Circuit |
Lab Handout: Series LRC.pdf PRE-LAB!!! |
|
LRC II |
Lab Handout: RLC Filter.pdf
Read comment to the right… Modify previous XL sheet? |
Recommend a revise. Make up 6 different filter circuits. Each circuit will use a function gen plus a load resistor with cap (or inductor, or BOTH) in series or parallel. Note do not redo the series LRC if that lab was already done. The idea is to plot Z vs omega, i_max versus omega, and phi vs omega for both theoretical and experimental values. Make each group do a different circuit then present each one to the class. The presentation should include a schematic and the plots. Students should state if the filter circuit is a bandpass, notch, hi-pass, or low pass filter. |
Radio Lab |
??? |
Manual is outdated. Consider looking at this link instead.
Note: instructor must ensure parts available if they chose to assign this lab. Give lab tech full semester lead time to give yourself time to adjust if parts are hard to find. |
